What is Build-it?

Build-it gives young people in South London the chance to learn skills and access training, work experience and real employment opportunities within the regeneration of their local communities.

Since April 2013, London Youth have been delivering Build-it, which combines youth work support with a focus on positive employability outcomes to give young people furthest away from employment, the experience, training, skills and support they need to progress into construction careers.

Originally conceived by London Youth and Cospa as a project to renovate housing stock in Lambeth, Build-it has since focussed in on community need and now sees young people doing much needed maintenance and building work to transform their estates or local community assets, thus creating a tangible dual benefit.

The programme

Over a 12 week period young people gain practical skills working on local construction or maintenance projects, mentored by experienced tradespeople. The project includes vocational qualifications delivered by construction employers. The Build-it team work closely with local contractors to make sure young people learn by doing, pick up the skills employers need and achieve hard education and training outcomes..

Through Build-it young people gain:

  • Increased confidence and resilience so they can take on challenges and setbacks
  • Six construction industry certificates and a CSCS card
  • Level One construction and personal social development qualifications
  • Work experience with building contractors
  • Move-on support to access employment or training
